Opening Keynote Address


"Literacy & Learning in the 21st Century"


  • external image 537380722_c9f7983b36_m.jpgThis address is based on a book that I wrote, which was originally intended to be a book about technology and teaching. As I began to research and plan the book, outlining the chapters and topics, I realized that it was not technology that I wanted to talk about. Certainly technology has changed over the past quarter century, but perhaps, having even more impact on us and our culture is the ways that information has changed. Information has changed in what it looks like, what we look at to view it, how we find it, where we go to find it, what we can do with it, and how we communicate it. It was only a minor cognitive leap to the conclusion that technology skills should not be what we are about. But literacy skills. But literacy skills that are atuned to a contemporary information landscape, where information has become increasingly:
    • Networked,
    • Digital,
    • Abundant, and
    • Hyper-connective
  • I hope to convey a general sense of how information has changed and the ways that our notions of literacy looks like, especially in the classroom. Here are some links to web sites with more information -- my online handouts:
